Intellectual (Technology) vs. Intuition (The Heart)
State Of The Art vs. State Of The Heart
In the forth century B.C. Aristotle described the brain as "an organ of minor importance," insisting that 'the seat of the soul and the control of voluntary movement- in fact , of nervous function in general - are to be sought in the heart."
Aristotle... Five senses were drawn together by a "common sense" located in the heart.
We have turned health into a commodity that is both sold and insured. Furthermore we are moving away from our body's innate intelligence for health and are moving toward reliance on technology for healing.
THE PARADIGM
A paradigm can be compared to a map, which is simply a tool used to get to a destination. If we were to scrutinize our currently accepted paradigm of health, we would see that it is based exclusively upon external solutions to our health problems. This is the natural consequence of our fondness for technology. This has created our “rescue syndrome” mentality. The rescue mentality is the one which causes us to ignore common sense (which is in fact not common at all) and act as we please. Then when our bodies rebel, we feel entitled to the “breakthrough medical discovery” to bail us out. Stop and ask yourself these simple questions. Does your “map for health” work? Do you have confidence in your health? Is it working for your friends and family? Is your health getting better or worse? Are you enjoying more vitality or less vitality as time goes on? Our current paradigm offers external answers to each and every problem encountered in the quest for health. Examples: drugs, vitamins, herbs, homeopathy, acupuncture, crystals, surgery, dentistry, chiropractic, optometry etc. This focus encourages a relinquishment of responsibility, when in reality the key to health and happiness is taking BACK responsibility. The emphasis of responsibility is a key part of my practice.
Shifting responsibility outwardly is nothing more than blaming. Think about it. Do you contribute your conditions to genetics, bad luck, your age, witches, lack for vaccination, too many vaccinations, lack of money, stress, and the list goes on.
When we study the history of modern medicine we begin to see a distinct pattern of treatment, and subsequent failure of treatment. In the early 1700's, the medical doctors frequently used a technique they called skull trephining. This procedure consisted of drilling holes in the patient's skull in order to allow evil spirits to escape. Please note, this was mainstream, accepted modern medicine. Here you can see that the cause (evil spirits) was external, and the cure (drilling holes) was external. Interesting enough, this word is not recognized by my computer's spell check. It no longer exists, in other words. The technique which replaced trephining was blood letting, which was simply “controlled” bleeding to allow demons out of the body. Once again we have the external cause (demons), responded to with the external treatment (blood letting). Next we have antibiotics. The thinking here was to kill the bug, cure the patient. The cause (a bug) was external, and the cure (antibiotics) external. Then we have tonsillectomy---the cause, infection, (external), the cure, surgery, (external). Today we see escalating numbers of patients turning to surgery to remove “diseased” organs - cancer patients routinely succumb to the “slash and burn” method of treatment.
My point here is that every one of these methods is consistent with the paradigm. I have described to you. None of these procedures are still in effect. We are bewildered as to how on earth people could have been so gullible, when the fact of the matter is that forty years from now, our descendents will look at us with the same disbelief, when they listen to stories about the violent methods we used on our bodies in an attempt to “win the war” against cancer. Both the diagnosis and the treatment with such methods as chemotherapy (nerve gas) and/ or lethal radiation will boggle the mind. Medical research is proving that these treatments for cancer are ineffective and in a lot of cases doing more harm than good, yet the procedures continue.
In the same context, I predict that all medical treatments will eventually become obsolete because they do not work, and in fact they ARE HARMFUL. We are seeing this trend obviated on a daily basis, but our obsession with blaming continues the catch-22 that the “cure” must be external. We are frantically replacing one ridiculous mode of treatment with another. The vast majority of popular drugs 20 years ago are no longer being used. They were PROVEN to be either ineffective, or in most cases, downright dangerous.
The drug companies would like you to believe we now have better drugs. I continually hear defense of drugs such as aspirin, for example. Yes, aspirin has been around for years, but it is big business and gullibility of the consumer that allows this. If the truth were told, the number of deaths which can be attributed to internal bleeding caused by the “innocuous” aspirin would boggle the mind
Pharmaceutical companies have taken over the airwaves in their attempts to generate ever larger profits. Their commercials are “footnoted” with the side effects, which read like this: “This drug may cause severe liver damage… this drug may cause heart problems… “How is it that a company can advertise a potentially fatal drug, but because they are being “open and honest” about the debilitating side effects, the drugs are allowed on the market. Does it not stand to reason that if a drug CAN kill you, and the company selling it is forced by law to reveal this to potential customers, that it is in fact toxic 100% of the time? Would a consumer be okay with an advertisement for cocaine, as long as it contained a warning such as “Cocaine may cause heart problems in a small percentage of people…” A consumer might at this point become enraged, and infuriated that this practice is legal. However, my stand is that this is yet one more instance in which the consumer must TAKE BACK RESPONSIBILITY. We can talk until blue in the face about the unethical behavior of these drug companies, yet the bottom line is - we are buying the products. We ARE the market.
Is this enough to make the blood boil? Or do we stop right here, and remember that when we TAKE BACK RESPONSIBILITY, it is IRRELEVANT WHAT THE DRUG COMPANIES ARE DOING. You can rest assured, the bottom line is profit. If their commercials stop working, the commercials will stop.
Thirty years ago, the most prolific advertisers in New England Journal of Medicine were none other than the tobacco industry. Presently it is pharmaceutical companies. Once again, we can learn from the past.
The modern parallel for tonsillectomies. …plastic tubes surgically implanted in an ear infections. This procedure is now in question, in ten years it will be embarrassing. In fact, tubes have already been proven ineffective by medical science. Likewise, medical literature states that antibiotics for ear infections are ineffective and unproven. Why would doctors continue to use these two procedures in their practices? Perhaps they are following the advice I saw on a bumper sticker. “If it ain't broke, fix it till it is”.
OKAY. Let's summarize. There are two problems with the medical model. The first is that its entire existence is based on external cause and external cure, and treatment is in a combative mode. This system is doomed to fail because of the elementary law of physics: every action has an opposite and equal reaction
There are only two ways to make a change. The first is the non-violent way - like the principles of Gandhi or Martin Luther King, or Jesus. The second is violent opposition… WAR, i.e. the war on cancer, the war on the Middle East or Terror. I may add here, there is only ONE way to make a LASTING change. Therefore, we begin to understand why the second method, the violent opposition, is doomed to failure. Think about this for a moment - When a war is over, the result is turmoil and conflict, resentment - the perfect breeding ground for the scenario to then repeat itself. In the history of mankind never has War resulted in peace. Never. Never. Never.
The definition of Insanity is to do the same thing and expect a different result. War is insane, Just as the war on cancer is.
An analogy that can be applied here is for example. If I wanted you to come up on stage at a lecture I was giving. I could do one of two things. The first option would be to come up to you in your seat and start tugging on your arm, Forcing or dragging you up on stage. As I pulled with more force you would resist with a force equal. The second way I could get the same result of bringing you on stage would be to walk up to you, put my arm on your shoulder, reassure you that I wouldn't do anything to hurt or embarrasses you and gently walk with you to the stage.
Which scenario do you think would provide me with a more relaxed (happy) subject? I think it is obvious that to getting someone on stage is not the challenge. The challenge is to have a person that is more relaxed. Parallel this with getting ride of the breast cancer you have been diagnosed with. Yes cutting off your breast does get ride of the cancer. What are the reactions that physics will have? Do you not think that embracing the breast cancer as I would a potential subject for my demonstration. In a loving way would be more productive?
Our family recently purchased a puppy. With this comes the responsibility of training this new member of our family. I was introduced to a technique in training that incorporates all of the non-violent approaches that I discussing. This dog training technique involves, NEVER saying NO, and NEVER using force. The two things that most people use to train their pets or children even. The Doctor who was explaining his technique explained that whenever you use a force on a pet the animal will resist with an equal force. For those who might be saying, “but it works”. Think again. The animal will be submissive to you because of your greater force, however given the opportunity they will rebel. They may turn on the owner, or a child. Just like a prisoner, they will submit to the force of being restrained, however given the opportunity, they will rebel given the opportunity. Going back to the dog training what you see with animals that are trained in this manner is amazing. A dog will submit, and obey just as well and most often better than when combative tools are used. I must also say that applying these techniques takes more time energy and patience in the early stages, but they certainly pay off.
There are countless other examples of using physics to work with as opposed against. John Lyons, one of the world's most famous horse trainers, advocates the same philosophy. These trainers do not advertise that they are using physics, or Gandhi/ Jesus approaches- whether or not they are aware of it may be another story.
I would choose an animal or friend that was “trained” in non-violent areas over violent ways every time. Just look at the movements of Gandhi, Martin Luther King, or Jesus. There was no force applied, yet the results are far-reaching and lasting.
The non-violent approach takes courage, patience, trust, clarity, faith etc. If these values are not exercised, the ego will manipulate the mind. The ego uses the tools of fear and prejudice.
Invariably, my patients will nod and agree with these theories, yet when we begin discussing their individual issue, it seems to be “the exception”. My point here is that, as long as the issue is the exception, they feel entitled to use force. The medical system uses force. That is the bottom line here. If change is effected, it does not last.
Holistic therapies have survived so many years because they improve the situation, without endangering the subject. Acupuncture, spinal adjustments, homeopathic, and herbal remedies were used 3000 years ago. These therapies work to support the human body, not overpower it. It is very clear that the treatment and herbs are identical today as they were 3000 years ago. The reason they have not changed is because they are effective, and more importantly they are in flow with a medical principle "first do no harm" The very terminology we have chosen is honest enough to clarify this difference: Allopathic medicine - allo means against - and homeopathic medicine - homeo means with.
And so it would seem that the ancient therapies are the most logical choice we can make when choosing health.
If I believed this, my essay would be finished.
I don't.
What I believe is that If we insist on framing our health within that incomplete external paradigm, we will come up against the same wall - that of physics, and the law of force. The force is gentler on the body with holistic therapy BUT IT IS STILL FORCE. It WILL elicit an equal and opposite reaction. Will this equate to a cure? Perhaps in small percentages. But does it heal? No. True healing does not exist within the modern (incomplete) paradigm. The point is that holistic therapy is definitely the less aggressive choice for suppressing symptoms, but the fact remains that holistic therapy is no different than the modern medical approach. They BOTH stagnate the patient's growth if they are conducted with force in mind.
Let's dissect this sentence: The spirit in which an act is conducted is more important that the act itself. This sentence will explain many anomalies of “recovery”. Why do certain people survive trauma that would kill others. Why indeed? Why are there documented cases of spontaneous remission attributed to chemotherapy and radiation therapy? I propose to you that in the cases of remission, the individual has accepted responsibility for their health.
Accepting responsibility for health is a process which can be taught. It is in fact the crux of my practice
In 1948 General Omar N. Bradley said it best. “We have too many men of science, too few men of God. We have grasped the mystery of the atom and rejected the Sermon on the Mount.” He continued by saying' ours is a world of nuclear giants and ethical infants. We know more about war than we know about peace, more about killing than we know about living.” Jesus and Gandhi knew nothing about killing, but without doubt, they knew the secret to happy, useful living. They were infants in war, and giants of ethics.
Albert Einstein stands out in our consciousness as perhaps the most technologically advanced individual to walk on this earth, and yet it was he who stated: “ a country cannot simultaneously prepare for war and peace. He also said that the one thing he had learned in a long life, was simply that “ all our science, when measured against reality, is primitive and childlike.”
It is impossible to simultaneously fight for health with insurance and combative treatments and expect to attain health. And yet, that is exactly what we expect from our current paradigm. In fact, we go one step further. We feel ENTITLED to health, because we have paid an insurance company, which has in their inventory complete and wonderful health for anyone who has the money to pay for it! The other attitude I encounter, is that patients feel entitled to health because it is their God-given right. However, their decision to carry health insurance then must seem to be second guessing God, or perhaps not believing that he will deliver the goods. (Once again, physics. One cannot prepare for disaster and health at the same time.)
Holistic and Allopathic approaches have both moved toward high tech state of the art procedures such as surgery, drugs, live cell microscopes, lasers, and the list goes on. Has all this technology brought us closer to our goal of happy, healthy lives, or are we moving away?
Think about this for a moment. We have cellular phones and remote controls for everything, would you agree that we should have more time in our life for self reflection and growth? After all, these technological gadgets are meant to be time savers, are they not? REALITY. This could not be further from truth. Most people I encounter state they don't have the time to journal or do breathing exercises. These exercises take twenty minutes out of the day.
Ask yourself, when is the last time your whole family was gathered at a sit-down dinner for one week straight?
When we ask better (deeper) questions we will get better answers. The answer to what ails you is there. The key is to ask the questions and then listen - listen to your heart.
I believe 99.99% of Americans need guidance and support in mind/body techniques. They need, in other words, to take a good long hard look at the STATE OF THEIR HEART.
As a doctor (Latin word to teach) I am committed to providing these resources by way of group lecture and one on one lecture.
Some of the fundamentals to STATE OF THE HEART are outlined on this web site under the headings Mind

We must stop intellectualizing health. The new approach will be the new paradigm. The truth is, we all have the God given guarantee to health and happiness that my patient's describe to me, but we are failing to access it. We are in fact setting ourselves up for failure with our technology based insurance systems.
Simplicity will be insurmountable without clarification of your values. The values most people cherish do not require more money or physical labor.
When people look for their health and happiness outside them they are moving away from simplicity. The opposite of simplicity is technology.
I look forward to serving you.

More Heart
The heart is a powerhouse, a bioelectric miracle generating a bioelectric field that is 40 to 60 times stronger than the field generated by your brain. By biological standards, this is very strong. The bioelectric field generated by the heart ripples through your whole body and far beyond. If you could set up the right kind of sensitive scanning device across town from someone and zero in on him or her, you'd find that the information wave generated each time our hearts beat could be picked up for miles around you. Each time you enter a room, the beating of your heart announces your presence and informs other biologic entities in the room as to how at peace or in conflict you are underneath your surface appearance.
The workings of the heart are influenced by the two branches of your autonomic nervous system; the sympathetic system that is associated with the stress-arousal response and the parasympathetic system that is a associated with the relaxation response. These two work together to speed up and slow down your heart rate sort of like the accelerator and brake of a car.
Heart to heart: imagine someone toward whom you feel much tenderness, friendship, love and compassionate concern. This could be a loved one, a close friend, or even a pet. As vividly as possible with your eyes closed, sense or imaging the presence of this being before you now. Allow yourself to get in to such with the genuine sense of love and care that you feel for this special one.
Now begin to focus on this person's heart, not the physical organ that pumps blood but rather that center of love that lies at the “heart” of each person. Reach out now - actually raisin your arms and reaching out with your physical hands - ad imaging cradling in your hands this person's place of deepest feeling, really touching his or her heart. Imaging that as you breathe in, a feeling of love and care wells up within you and fills your own heart. As you exhale, this wellspring of love within you - visualized as streams of light or energy - flows from your heart out through your arms and hands, and pours gently into this person's heart.
